March 7th celebrates the day the Dodecanese Islands were incorporated back into Greece following WWII. The day is commemorated with a church service and the laying of wreaths by the mayor and members of the council, military and other services and the schools.
Vasilopita (Greek: '(St.) Basil-pie', see below) is a New Year's Day bread or cake in Greece and many other areas in eastern Europe and the Balkans which contains a hidden coin or trinket which gives good luck to the receiver. It is made of a variety of doughs, depending on regional and family tradition, including tsoureki.

A stunning day out on the Diagoras, visit the cave, go swimming, stop at St Emilianos, go around the island, have lunch, make new friends and pamper yourself. Well actually, it’s a little more than a week, but I thought I would just upload a small and varied gallery of images from Symi and other Dodecanese islands.
Symi celebrates the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a street party organised by the Olive Tree and supported by the community. Money was raised for local good causes.
Music at the Olive Tree with Ellis and Connelly on May 26th raising money for local charties.
Some shots of Symi harbour, Yialos, in May. Some were taken from the village looking down, others from the quayside (the Blue Star) and others from the deck of the Dodekanisos Express early one morning.
Some photos from Neil’s Symi photo walk. Currently the route is through the Pedi valley to the sea, so you can get a bus back up afterwards. Plenty to see and photograph!
