It is Independence Day in Greece today. If you want to know more about the day and the events taking place, then take a look at our previous posts and photos from last year and the year before. (There are older photos going back to 2005 on the now ‘archived’ part of Symi Dream. HERE.)

And talking of old photos… Here are three sent in by friends from Nimborio, which date back to around 1998. Interesting to see that Yialos was as prone to flooding then as it is now.

And talking of flooding… we created a small stream ourselves yesterday. We were able to get hold of a sub pump (or something equally as technical) which was dropped into the unused but over-full sterna beneath the shop. We had to empty the water out as it was starting to make the walls damp, so we ran a long hose down the steps, turned on the pump and then waited…

Until after about five hours the well was finally empty. This was all rain water which had been collecting over the past few years. We don’t use water in the shop so it wasn’t doing us any good and there was no garden nearby to empty it on… mind you it didn’t smell very nice so no one else really wanted it. But it’s done now and by the end of the summer the walls should finally have dried out.

In case you were wondering what the inside of the sterna looked like...
