Helpful Symi folk and a non-smoking olive tree

The days just get better and better. We had some things to do in Yialos yesterday which involved visiting a very helpful police station, post office and bank among other places; and we were even offered a lift back up to the village by a previous mayor of the island – which was not turned down. Never decline a lift when there are no taxis, the bus is on holiday and you really don’t want to walk up the Kali Strata. A nice sunny day – warm in the sun on the far side of the harbour, but chilly in the shadows and in the house. The smell from the souvlaki shop was too good to resist so we even had lunch out, for the first time in months.

As for Anthony’s questions about The Olive Tree – I’m not sure about internet access as yet but I do know that there will be some outside seating at the side of the building, away from the cars, bikes etc. and the road. This is going to be well used as the inside will be smoke-free. In accordance with new laws (which may or may not be in place already, it’s hard to tell) that state there will be no smoking in public places in Greece (actually from July I think but don’t quote me), The Olive Tree will be non-smoking inside. I think it was always going to be which is great news for non-smokers. And having seating outside will be fine for people who want to smoke; so everyone should be happy. The best thing about having friends start up a new style coffee and cake café is that we get to test the cooking while it is still ‘in rehearsal’. Well, the Millionaire’s shortbread was fantastic the other night and I can heartily recommend the flapjacks, and the strawberry cake. Can’t wait to see what I’m going to be asked to try next.

Shortbread eh? I may just have to sample some on my next visit, purely in the interests of consumer research of course…
