Day to day life on a small Greek island

Photographs of Symi to help the school; learning and a lemon

October 9th, 2008 Posted in Day to day, Symi Photos

I mentioned the other day that a couple of boys from the local school had come to the shop asking if they could do some work to raise money for a new computer. We suggested that they went out and took some photos which we could then make into cards to sell, with profits going to the school computer fund. A lump sum payment was also negotiated to get the ball rolling.

The lads came back a couple of nights ago with their pictures. Some of them will be made into cards and they were paid for their work. I’ve put a gallery up of some of the images that came back. So now you can take a look and see a Symi schoolboy’s view of his island. Actually, of the village, as that’s what their assignment was. The images on today’s post are all from that gallery.

Other children from the school have been out and about raising money for the computer. We bought a calendar from some the other day. It’s a cartoon calendar with witty captions, all to do with money and the cost of living – as far as I can make out. I understand the words but the humour is a bit lost on me.

Only a couple more weeks of the official season left to go; new arrivals came in last night and a few more visitors are expected next week. Then it will be back to the winter routine and the theme of our winter season this year is ‘learning’. We are going to get together for Greek practice again and I shall be doing more grammar and vocabulary at home – honest.  Neil id going to start learning the saxophone (as soon as we get one) which will be complemented by me teaching him music theory. The book has been ordered! I wonder if it will be like teaching your partner to drive? Something that, they say, no one should do. We shall see.

You will be relieved to know I finally got around to painting the roof yesterday; well, the first coat on the worst cracks at least. Another coat will go on today as long as the gathering clouds don’t gather too much, collide and empty on us. I discovered one of the reasons for the leaks while I was up there; a lemon had forced its way into the overflow pipe and blocked it. Got that sorted. Hopefully dry days lie ahead…

Interesting photos from the schoolkids. The wall painting of the tree looks very Minoan
