Day to day life on a small Greek island

Galapagos comes to Symi

June 8th, 2008 Posted in Chorio, Day to day, Symi products

This week has been busy with preparing the gallery for an exhibition of Neil’s photos from the Galapagos Islands and Peru and last night saw the opening. During the course of the evening around 60 people viewed the exhibition, the new island newspapers Ta Nea and Symi Visitor will be covering it and it seems to have gotten off to a good start. Not only are there images of some of the animals but there is also text about them and the islands in Greek and English and a small ‘quiz’. The aim is to involve the schools when they start up again in September and invite school children of all ages to take a look and think about conservation and other cultures - in a small way.

Symi Dream Galapagos exhibition

I was able to take a few photos before things got really busy and there’s a small album on the album page here (including two accidental shots from the taverna where we had lunch.) The exhibition will be open from now until October with a small break in August when ODAS are using the space for another show, this time it will be of art by local artists. The ODAS exhibition is becoming a regular summer feature and this year they hope to have it scheduled in the Symi Festival. You can find out more about ODAS on this page. There was a meeting of the group at the shop last night before the exhibition and notes from it will soon be available: if you want more information about how to get involved speak to Neil, Terri or Aruni. (Or email us here and we’ll pass your message on.)

Actually a couple of other new things have come to the Symi Dream shop these past couple of days. Check out the book page and scroll down for two books that have been added to our shelves.

KORI TOY NIREA

Eleftheria is the daughter of our neighbour, Anika, who you can often see sitting on the gallery step of an evening. The book tells her family story and includes poems and many fascinating old photographs from Symi’s past. It is written in Greek and available from our shop and other shops on Symi.

Derek’s book tells his story of building a boat on Symi and contains many local characters you may recognise. This book is now available in the shop and at other outlets on the island.

So, that hectic week is over and we can prepare for another one - with two visitors arriving in the next couple of days. That will mean I’m out and about a bit more so hopefully will get some more pics from other places that I don’t often visit, we shall see.

Good luck with the exhibition. I do hope that it is still running in early October when I shall be able to see it. Why is it that photos of people are always the most interesting? I like that one of people sitting on the steps outside the shop!
